Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any prominent prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
